Summer acne: Causes and how to treat it effectively
Exhaustive report, written in Spanish, about Acné de Verano (technically sometimes known as Acné Aestivalis or Acné Mallorca), which happens just when you want to get better skin and how to eradicate it without damaging the skin barrier.
Acné de Verano: The “Perfect Storm” on your Skin
It is one of the most frequent dermatology consultations during July and August. Persons who have had clean skin throughout the winter, suddenly experience granite sprouts, black spots or a rough texture on their front and chin.
It's not a coincidence. Summer creates a microclimate on your face that favors bacterial proliferation.
- Las Causas: Why do we sell grain in summer?
It's not just one cause, it's the combination of four simultaneous factors:
- Skin engrossment (Hyperkeratosis)
This is the most unknown factor.
The mechanism: To defend itself from solar aggression, the skin becomes thicker (the horny layer hardens). It's like your skin generates a microscopic “callus” so that the sun doesn't penetrate.
The consequence: When the surface thickens, the exit from the pore becomes blocked. The sebum falls down beneath this layer of hard skin, creating microcysts and closed comedones.
- The Sweat + Sebum Cocktail
The heat dilates the pores and stimulates the sebaceous glands.
Sweat is not just water; change the pH of the skin.
When excess grease mixes with sweat and dirt, a perfect “plug” is created so that the C. acnes bacteria (causes acne) have a party.
- Occlusive Cosmetics (Sunscreens)
Many old or body sunscreens are too greasy (comedogenic). If you use the same amount of cream on your face as on your body, or if you don't remove the water-resistant filters at night, you're choking the pore.
- Rebound Dehydration
The sun dries the skin. The skin, when it feels dry, goes into panic and produces more acceptance to compensate. Result: skin dehydrated from the inside, but greasy and with grains inside.
- El Mito Peligroso: “The sun dries the grain”
I'm sure you've heard (the thought): “I'm going to take the sun so that the grains sequen me”.
It is clear that the sun is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial in the short term. The first few days on the beach, the skin seems to get better.
Pero es una trampa.
After 2 or 3 weeks, due to the Hyperkeratosis (thickening) that we explained before, the Rebound Effect occurs. All the sebum that is “dried out” is actually accumulating beneath the hardened skin.
Result: An acne breakout breaks out in September that is much worse and deeper than the one you had in June.
- Treatment: The Summer Anti-Acne Protocol
Treating acne in summer is delicate because we cannot use very aggressive acids (which stain in the sun). The strategy is: Clean, Calm and Texturize.
Step 1: Double Cleaning (Obligatory)
If you use sunscreen, a regular spray isn't enough.
- Use the Make-up Removing Balm: Massage dry skin. The grease disuels the grease (sebum and sunscreen).
- Cleansing Gel with Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is liposoluble (goes into the grease of the pore and cleans it). Use it at night. It's the best asset for summer acne.
Step 2: “Oil-Free” Hydration”
Cambia tu crema.
Looking for gel or serum textures?.
Star ingredient: Niacinamide. Regulates the grease, deflates the red grain and prevents it from leaving marks (stains) afterwards.
Star ingredient 2: Azelaic Acid. It's safe in summer, kills bacteria and removes stains.
Step 3: Specific Photoprotection
Take away last year's solar. Buy one that explicitly says:
“No Comedogenic” (No covering the pore).
“"Dry Touch".
“Oil-Free” (Free of acceptances).
“"Sebum regulator".
Pharmacy reference brands: ISDIN Fusion Water, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Oil Correct, Eucerin Oil Control.
Step 4: Enzyme Exfoliation
As the skin is thick in the sun, we need to “file” that dead layer so that the sebum salts.
Do not use fatty grain exfoliants (irritan).
Use enzymatic exfoliants (foaming octopuses) or mild toners once a week. It helps to keep the pore open without sensitizing the skin to the sun.
- Body Acne (Spine and Chest)
In summer, acne is very common on the back (Bacne) due to sweat and synthetic clothing.
Solution:
Shower immediately after sweating.
Use a Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid body spray after showering. They are very effective in large areas such as the backlands.
Wear cotton or linen clothing that sweats.
- What NOT to do (Fatal errors)
- Manipulate the grains: With the sun, any inheritance will turn into a brown spot (hyperpigmentation) that will take months to disappear. Touching prohibited.
- Use toothpaste or alcohol: the skin will burn and the sun will set in that area.
- Stop using moisturizer: If you dry out your skin, it will produce more grease. Moisturize with light gels.
Summary of the Action Plan:
Mañana: Gentle cleansing + Niacinamide + Solar Dry Touch.
Evening: Double cleansing (Oil + Gel with Salicylic) + Light moisturizer (Azelaico).
Weekly: Gentle exfoliation.
By following this routine, you will avoid the September rebound effect and maintain the smooth skin texture under the sun.
